Formaldehyde and Pregnancy

In a recent study, researchers from Graz led by Prof. Dr. Niels Hammer (Chair of Macroscopic and Clinical Anatomy, Medical University of Graz) examined the effects of formalin use in dissection courses on pregnancy and breastfeeding: "Formaldehyde remains essential in anatomy teaching, but its potential risks for pregnant and breastfeeding students are still uncertain. Our review shows that exposure levels in anatomy labs often exceed precautionary limits, while evidence for reproductive harm in this specific setting remains limited and inconclusive. We therefore recommend a risk-management approach based on better ventilation, exposure reduction, and supportive alternatives for affected students. At the same time, the paper highlights that inconsistent institutional policies can themselves create avoidable stress and inequity for students", summarizes Prof. Hammer the study that appeared in Annals of Anatomy
