DESCRIPTION:Organizer: Institute of Anatomy\, University of Bern\, Switzerland \n\n\n\nThis course provides a comprehensive introduction to state-of-the-art stereology\, with a strongemphasis on practical application in biomedicine. Topics covered include experimental design\,sampling strategies\, the use of stereological probes\, estimation of stereological parameters\, and theapplication of statistical methods appropriate for stereological analyses.The course combines lectures\, classroom exercises using real biomedical images\, and laboratorypracticals that demonstrate proper sampling and tissue processing techniques on real biologicalorgans.The workshop is aimed at students and researchers in biology and medicine who work with thesampling and quantitative analysis of three-dimensional structures. Applications involving any form ofmicroscopy — including light microscopy\, confocal laser scanning microscopy\, multiphotonmicroscopy\, and electron microscopy — as well as non-invasive imaging techniques such as CT andMRI\, are welcome.Participants are encouraged to bring their own projects and specific questions. Ample time will bededicated to individual discussions with the instructors throughout the course. \n\n\n\nRegistration deadline: 31.7.2026

SUMMARY:Pernkopf & Co – Anatomy during the Nazi Period and its Relevance for Today
DESCRIPTION:Institute for Ethics\, Collections & History of Medicine \n\n\n\nin cooperation with the Department of Anatomy \n\n\n\nMedical University of Vienna \n\n\n\nThis interdisciplinary symposium will provide new insights into the history of anatomy during the National Socialist (Nazi) period and its relevance for today.  \n\n\n\nFollowing a general overview of the topic\, a first panel of presentations will focus on new research on body procurement at the anatomical institutes of Breslau\, Erlangen and Vienna under the Nazi regime. A second panel will present insights into the complicity of the anatomical sciences before\, during and after the Nazi period\, as well as research on the provenance of human remains from Nazi victims in the legacy collections of the Max-Planck-Society. A final panel will offer reflections on historical anatomical images derived from bodies of Nazi victims such as Eduard Pernkopf’s through the lens of curatorial and archival practice\, as well as the fine arts. These images have proved to be “uncontainable”\, as they have proliferated in the anatomy literature as copies\, tracings and derivatives. Now\, they are part of the training data for generative Artificial Intelligence – continuing to haunt our collective anatomical gaze. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nMore details soon.
